Hijab: The Identity of Muslim Women

The word ‘Hijab’ is basically used for that clothing which plays a role of a drape, while a Muslim woman puts it on to shield her parts of body, such as head, face, chest and or, whole of the body, as she is advised to cover, in the Holy Quran. If we have a look on the Arabic literacy, we find that the word of Hijab or Pardah is meant to be for ‘a screen or curtain’ and is implemented in the Qur’an to refer to a partition. This is considered as the identity of the Muslim Women in many countries of various continents. It represents the act of obedience to Allah and declares a step forward towards freedom (The freedom that will be judged by their look rather than their intelligence). Allah says in the Holy Quran: “Say to the believing men that: they should cast down their glances and guard their private parts (by being chaste), this is better for them. (Al Quran, 24:30)”. It is declared from the above quoted verse that Allah commands the Muslim men to keep their glances down in order to keep their gazes off, to stare women except their wives to avert them from any desirability of sin. They are also advised to protect themselves from any of the sinning deed via Hijab that is identified as a ‘Hijab of eyes’ and ‘Hijab of body’, respectively. These qualities of character and, obedience to Allah bring modesty and Haya in one’s character. The modesty and the shame which is also termed as ‘Haya’ are the standards of honor in Islam. These are honorable qualities in a human’s life and they reflect in one’s character, talking and demeanor. These qualities of character are the keys of a peaceful society and therefore a successful nation. “Do not be much ashamed. He forbade him from saying this: Because modesty is half of faith”. “Modesty brings only goodness”, it’s been mentioned in another place. It’s been said that, “If you have no shame you can do what you like”. “Modesty is a part of faith and faith would lead to paradise and rudeness would lead to Hell fire”, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) once said Haya and Hijab have also been put together over women in such a way that, Allah says: “And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display their adornment only that which is apparent (Al-Quran, 24:31)”.

In modern time, women have been working in all agriculture societies, side by side the men, as well as elevating livestock in their traditional Hijab. In today’s modern world, Muslim women, which are living in urban societies, they have performed with confidence and extraordinary achievements in the field of judiciary, education, research, medicine, parliament and others”.

In this verse, Allah instructs women to put on Hijab in such a way that all of her body parts are screened including her gaze. She is advised even to keep her trimming secret except that which is obvious, while she moves out of the home. It is forbidden for her to expose herself to the illicit men. This is the way to keep maintained her honor and respect in the society, and to introduce her as a modest woman, and therefore to protect her from the mischief of forbidden man. Muslim women are facing difficulties in social achievements of knowledge and other activities due to Hijab, it is a wrong concept. When we read the History of Muslim, it is disclosed, that Muslim women have paid very significant rule in different fields.
