Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jammu & Kashmir, P K Pole, conducted an extensive review of preparations for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 during his visit to Kupwara on Friday. Accompanied by Police Observer Ravi Shankar and other officials, the CEO chaired a meeting of Nodal Officers and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs) to scrutinize the detailed election preparedness plan, presented via a PowerPoint Presentation by District Election Officer Ayushi Sudan. Sudan highlighted comprehensive arrangements, including a contingency and emergency evacuation plan for polling stations situated in high-altitude areas near the Line of Control. The CEO meticulously evaluated various facets of the ongoing election process on a constituency-wise basis, covering aspects like polling station arrangements, transportation plans, polling staff training, and voter awareness campaigns under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program. Stressing the significance of Adequate Minimum Facilities (AMF) at polling stations, P K Pole emphasized the necessity of a voter-friendly environment, urging for extensive plantation drives and provision of basic amenities on polling day. Moreover, the CEO directed vigorous voter awareness initiatives to ensure a high turnout, strict adherence to Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines, and media monitoring to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. During the visit, P K Pole inaugurated a live Art Exhibition under SVEEP at TRC Kupwara to foster awareness and education among voters, while encouraging young voters to inspire others to participate in the elections. The inspection also encompassed evaluations of the election control room, Media Certification Monitoring Committee (MCMC), and the Strong Room, where measures for the safety and security of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were scrutinized. The meeting and exhibition saw the presence of SSPs Kupwara and Handwara, ADDC Kupwara, ADC Handwara, AROs, Election Nodal Officers, and other relevant officials. Continuing his proactive engagement, Chief Electoral Officer, Jammu & Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole, also visited Baramulla to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the Counting Center and Strong Rooms designated for Baramulla Parliamentary Constituency at the indoor sports stadium.

Among the independent candidates who filed their nomination papers on the final day were Prince Parvez, Shafeeqa Begum, Bilal Ahmad Wani, Syed Ameer Suhail, Mohammad Sultan Ganaie, Shahdib Hanief Khan, Ghulam Nabi Parray, Dr Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat, Ashiq Hussain, Shabir Ahmad Malik, Mohammad Abdullah Khan, Haamid Hussain Bhat, Firdous Ahmad Bhat, Shabir Ahmad Dar, and Arun Kumar Raina. Additionally, Munir Ahmad Khan from the National People’s Front, Mehraj ud Din Ahanger from All J&K Kissan Mazdoor Party, and Suraya Nissar from the National Republic Party of India also lodged their nomination papers before the RO for 1-Baramulla Parliamentary Constituency. Notable candidates in the fray include Jammu and Kashmir’s former chief minister and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah, People’s Conference president Sajad Lone, PDP leader Mir Fayaz, and former MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who is currently incarcerated. These candidates have also submitted their nominations from Baramulla Parliamentary Constituency. The polling in the constituency is scheduled to take place on May 20.
