“Concerns from either the farming community or the Government over the dwindling area of agriculture are not noticed anywhere in Kashmir Valley or Jammu division.”
In the fast changing developmental scenario in Jammu & Kashmir the agriculture farming does not get the attention which other sectors of economy particularly hotels, transport services, communication and trade are getting for last more than three years. Fact remains that tourism and construction sectors have got an unprecedented boost which the agriculture sector did not get obviously due to reducing attention of the Government towards its growth and expansion. While the trend of using agriculture for non agriculture purposes particularly civil and commercial constructions does not head to any dead end in Jammu & Kashmir, concerns from either the farming community or the Government over the dwindling area of agriculture are not noticed anywhere in Kashmir Valley or Jammu division. The reducing agriculture activities are attributed not only to unprecedented interest of the people in the civil and commercial constructions but also to increasing trend of changing agriculture land into apple orchards due to unprecedented rise in the interest of people in high density plantations in Kashmir Valley. The agriculture sector as such has consequently fallen from unprecedented highs to unprecedented lows during last more than a decade in Jammu & Kashmir. A careful analysis of the unprecedentedly reducing farming activities could take the agriculture scientists, planners and administrators of the Jammu & Kashmir Government to the root causes of the reducing farming activity in Jammu & Kashmir. Though climate change, increasing tendencies for high density apple varieties and the unprecedented expansion of construction sector due to uncontrolled population growth are the main causes of reducing interest of people in agriculture farming but fact remains that increasing concerns of food security necessitate development of a more sustainable and resilient agri-food industry.
“While the fact remains that soft agriculture loans for the purposes of small investments always play a bigger role in increasing the productivities in farming sectors, the initiatives for soft agriculture loans could play a bigger role in full scale revival of agriculture farming across Jammu & Kashmir. In the ongoing era of technological intervention the farmers mostly use agriculture loans for modernising farming practices through the state-of-the-art machineries and implements like Power Tillers, Reapers, Weeders, Harvesters, Rice Transplanters, Pump Sets, Sprayers, Threshers, Tractors, Load Carriers and Wheel Carts. Since rising challenges of food security necessitate unprecedented focus on agriculture farming, the utilisation of public resources for full scale revival of agriculture farming inevitably deserves and demands highest priority.”
Unfortunately limited public resources and inaccessibility of local farmers to climate smart technologies, and agri-food logistics are largely contributing to reducing interest of people in agriculture farming in Jammu & Kashmir particularly Kashmir Valley .
