On three days of Eidul Azha the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) uses dedicated vehicles for hygienic removal of animal waste from the doorsteps of the residents free of charges but unfortunately the top civic body suspends the routine practice of garbage collection for three consecutive days that causes huge inconvenience to the huge populations across the Srinagar city. While the hygienic removal of animal hides is an unavoidable compulsion for three consecutive days of Eid Ul Asha for Srinagar Municipal Corporation, the collection of garbage for which residents pay the prescribed fee is being unfortunately suspended for three consecutive days despite being an equally pressing compulsion . In fact the solid waste disposal a pressing compulsion not only in Srinagar city but also in major towns of Kashmir Valley necessitates urgent attention in the matters of both the collection of animal hides and as well as the garbage that accumulates more hugely on three days of Eid Ul Adha than normal days. While animals are slaughtered and their remains are lifted free of charges from the doorsteps of the residents on three consecutive days of Eid Ul Adha, the garbage hugely accumulating in the dustbins at the doorsteps of the residents is not lifted for three long days only to cause huge inconvenience to the huge populations across Srinagar city. True it is that collection of animal hides is an extra burden on the garbage collection squads of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) but it is not so only for SMC but also for the civic bodies in most of the Metropolitan cities of the country where garbage collection squads simultaneously collect both the animal hides and as well as the garbage from the doorsteps of the residents. Wisdom demands that SMC’s garbage collection squads remove both the animal hides and as well as the garbage dumps simultaneously from the doorsteps of the residents much before the rotting of either the animal hides or the garbage dumps createserious health hazards.
“While the solid waste disposal system does not normally evoke any criticism in Srinagar city due to efficient working of garbage lifting squads on normal days, the stress that mounts on them on three days of Eidul Azha necessitates certain the measures for simultaneous removal of both the animal hides and as well as the garbage dumps to prevent occurrence health hazards. Allowing a situation to develop that increases the vulnerability of residents to health hazards is a dereliction of duty not only for Srinagar Municipal Corporation but also for civic bodies of major towns of Kashmir Valley. An action plan for simultaneous removal of both the animal hides and as well as the garbage dumps demands and deserves immediate attention of intervention of SMC and civic bodies of all major towns of Kashmir Valley.”
