Panel Also inspects flood affected areas in Pampore, Kakapora, Awantipora
Pulwama: The Inter Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), appointed by the Union Government visited on Monday Pulwama district to evaluate the damage caused by recent flash floods.
The team, which included representatives from various ministries, was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama and local officials. They inspected affected areas, including orchards, paddy fields, and damaged infrastructure such as roads and bridges in the Pampore, Kakapora, and Awantipora tehsils. During a review meeting at the Circuit House in Pulwama, the IMCT received a comprehensive presentation on the district’s profile, geographical challenges, and the impact of heavy rainfall. The team learned about the district’s multi-phase disaster response, which included rescue and relief efforts such as ration distribution, provision of potable water, food kits, medical aid, and the relocation of vulnerable families to designated centers. The meeting highlighted the significant damage to essential infrastructure, including power supply systems, drinking water schemes, and school buildings. Temporary restoration efforts were prioritized, and safety audits were conducted in affected schools, with relocations implemented as necessary. While immediate measures like road clearance and restoration of utilities have been initiated, long-term resilience planning is also in progress, focusing on strengthening embankments and enhancing disaster preparedness. The IMCT was informed that detailed damage assessments are being compiled for submission to the Government of India. The team commended the district administration’s response measures, which involved collaboration among senior officials from various departments, including Public Works, Jal Shakti, and Health, among others.
