Jammu|September, 10: Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has approved the construction of an 80-bed running room at Jammu Tawi Railway Station for loco pilots and train managers, along with an integrated crew lobby.
The new facility is planned to replace the existing running room at the station, which the railway administration said has become inadequate with the increase in train services and the number of running staff.
The proposed running room will provide accommodation and rest facilities for loco pilots and train managers between duties. It is planned to include air-conditioned rooms, upgraded sanitation facilities, food services and other amenities aimed at providing staff with adequate rest before they resume duty.
The integrated crew lobby is expected to bring crew-related facilities together at the station and streamline arrangements for running staff.
Railway officials said adequate rest for loco pilots and train managers is an important component of safe train operations, as fatigue can affect alertness and decision-making during duty.
The project is therefore also being viewed as part of the division’s efforts to strengthen operational safety while improving working conditions for frontline railway employees.
The approval comes amid the expansion of train services through Jammu Tawi and the increasing workload on running staff.
The Jammu Division said the project would improve the facilities available to loco pilots and train managers and provide them with a more suitable environment to rest after duty.
The division has also recently announced measures aimed at improving the training and welfare of loco pilots, including the planned installation of a desktop simulator at the Jammu Lobby for simulation-based operational training.
Officials said the welfare and training measures are intended to support the railway’s broader focus on safe and efficient train operations.
