Srinagar, Mar 04: Following instructions from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to address concerns over inflated prices and substandard goods, the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) department has issued warnings to traders and shopkeepers.
Director of FCS&CA, Abdul Rashid War, told Kashmir Horizon that that the department has instructed traders and shopkeepers across the Valley to display price lists at their establishments.”In the first instance, the teams visited the markets and asked the traders, shopkeepers to display the price list at their respective units,” he said, adding that a warning has been issued to all. Director further indicated that legal action would be taken against those who fail to comply with the directive. “Nobody will be spared. We will take legal action against those involved in overpricing and disobeying the norms,” he said.Notably the Government has primarily issued warnings, and the extent of actual enforcement remains to be seen.
Fatima Jan, a local at Lal Chowk said that they always issue warnings,” said local resident. But nothing ever changes. The price of bread, vegetable and other essentials are still too high, and the quality is still poor, she said. Another resident, Ghulam Nabi, expressed his concern over the lack of quality control. “I’m tired of buying substandard milk,” he said. “Will these warnings actually lead to any real action?. We have heard these promises before,” he said. Another elderly resident, Abdul Majid said that issuing warning during Ramadan is nothing new. Will they actually enforce the rules, or will this just be another empty threat?”Meanwhile an FCS&CA Official said they have sent two to three teams to every district to ensure that price lists are adhered to,” however, the degree to which these teams will actively enforce regulations beyond issuing warnings is unclear. The department’s action comes after a period of de-regulation, which saw essential goods like bread, mutton, vegetables, and milk experience unchecked price increases and quality compromises. The public now awaits to see if the government’s warnings will translate into concrete measures to protect consumers.
