Srinagar: Panic ensued in Kursu Rajbagh, Srinagar, as floodwaters from the Jhelum river inundated residential areas, submerging streets and entering homes. The situation necessitated the deployment of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, who provided boats and personnel to assist affected residents.
Eyewitness accounts indicated a rapid rise in water levels, prompting families to move essential belongings to higher ground. Residents expressed their fears, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, recalling the devastating floods of 2014. Many locals criticized the authorities for their slow response, noting a lack of preventive measures prior to the flooding. By the afternoon, SDRF and police teams were actively rescuing stranded families and providing immediate relief, with additional reinforcements on standby. Officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department assured that they were closely monitoring vulnerable embankments and maintaining a round-the-clock vigil. They urged residents to remain cautious and follow safety advisories. As evening approached, the community remained on high alert, closely watching water levels while joint efforts continued to mitigate the impact of the flooding.
