Srinagar |: The Allama Iqbal Library (AIL) at the University of Kashmir (KU) recently organized a one-day capacity building program titled ‘NextGen Libraries: Skill Upgradation for Library and Information Science Professionals’ to enhance the professional competencies of library and information science professionals.

The event emphasized the need for libraries to adapt to emerging technologies and user needs, as articulated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, who described libraries as the intellectual heartbeat of academic institutions. She stressed the importance of evolving libraries into dynamic knowledge hubs that integrate traditional resources with modern digital services to cater to 21st-century learners. Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, highlighted the program’s role in providing librarians with a platform to upgrade their skills, which is essential for supporting multidisciplinary education, research innovation, and lifelong learning. Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal underscored the significance of professional development in the library sector for maintaining academic excellence and ensuring students have easy access to quality information resources. Dr. Reyaz Rufai, a former University Librarian at AIL KU, delivered a keynote address on the necessity of continuous skill enhancement in library services to keep pace with rapidly changing information technologies and user expectations. Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Lone, the current University Librarian, welcomed participants and introduced new services and initiatives aimed at improving user experience at AIL. A notable highlight of the event was the launch of a mental fitness and wellness division called ‘Beyond Books,’ designed to promote holistic well-being among students and staff. The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Uzma Qadri, Senior Assistant Librarian at AIL KU, with Dr. M. Ishaq Lone providing the formal vote of thanks. The inaugural function was attended by various administrative officials, faculty members, scholars, and students from the campus, reflecting a strong commitment to advancing library services and professional development.
