Says “Kashmir’s Journey From Seasonal Tourist Activity To All Weather Destination Unstoppable”

“Chief Minister Omar Abdullah this week inaugurated the Travel & Tourism Fair (TTF) Kolkata-2025, marking it as India’s oldest and most influential B2B travel trade event. This three-day event was significant for shaping tourism discussions in Eastern India, and this year, it prominently featured Jammu and Kashmir, both symbolically and substantively. Omar Abdullah’s address served not only as a ceremonial opening but also as a comprehensive policy pitch and an invitation for collaboration. He aimed to revitalize the tourism narrative of Jammu and Kashmir, addressing both the challenges and opportunities the region faces. The Chief Minister outlined a multi-dimensional vision for the future of tourism in the Union Territory, emphasizing initiatives such as border tourism, homestay-driven empowerment, the revival of cinematic landscapes, and sustainable travel innovations.”

Against the vibrant backdrop of the Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Travel & Tourism Fair (TTF) Kolkata-2025—India’s oldest and most influential B2B travel trade event. The three-day mega show, known for shaping tourism discourse in Eastern India, took on added significance this year with Jammu and Kashmir featuring prominently in both symbolism and substance. More than just a ceremonial inauguration, Omar Abdullah’s address doubled as a comprehensive policy pitch, an invitation to collaborate, and a strategic statement aimed at revitalizing Jammu & Kashmir’s tourism narrative amid challenges and opportunities. From border tourism to home stay-driven empowerment, from the revival of cinematic landscapes to sustainable travel innovations, the CM laid out a nuanced, multi-dimensional vision for the future of tourism in the Union Territory.

Tourism A Bridge Between West Bengal And J&K: In his keynote address to a packed audience of travel professionals, policymakers, and international dignitaries, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the potential for deepening cultural and economic linkages between Jammu & Kashmir and West Bengal. He called TTF Kolkata a “vital platform” for promoting mutual growth in the tourism sector and for encouraging meaningful partnerships that go beyond business transactions. “There is a deep emotional and cultural connection between Bengal and Kashmir,” the Chief Minister observed. “From the days when Rabindranath Tagore wrote about Kashmir’s mesmerizing beauty to today’s Bengali travellers who continue to visit the Valley in every season, the bond remains strong. We want to strengthen that further.” The presence of dignitaries such as Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the CM; Dheeraj Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary; and global representatives including the Counsel General of Thailand, as well as tourism officials from Sikkim and Chhattisgarh, added gravitas to the occasion. It also underscored J&K’s strategy of positioning itself as an integral player in India’s broader tourism diplomacy.

A Sector Reimagined; J&K’s Tourism Transformation: Omar Abdullah’s speech painted a compelling picture of how Jammu & Kashmir has reengineered its tourism architecture in recent years. Shedding the image of a destination locked in seasonal cycles and geopolitics, the Union Territory now markets itself as a year-round, all-segment travel hub. “J&K is no longer just about snow in Gulmarg or tulips in Srinagar,” Abdullah remarked. “We have systematically identified and developed off-beat destinations such as Gurez, Bangus, Bhaderwah, Sanasar, Doodhpathri, and Basohli. Each of these offers a unique flavour of nature, culture, and solitude.” Particularly notable was the Chief Minister’s focus on border tourism. By spotlighting areas like Uri, Keran, Teetwal, and Suchetgarh, he conveyed not only the aesthetic potential of these regions but also their strategic value in community-driven development. “These destinations carry stories of resilience and hope,” he said. “Our effort is to convert them into windows of peace and prosperity, where locals benefit directly from tourism-led transformation.”

Empowering Communities, Especially Women: Perhaps the most significant thematic undercurrent in Abdullah’s remarks was the role of tourism in social empowerment. “Home stays are no longer a niche product,” he asserted. “They are a grassroots revolution.” Women-led homestays in districts such as Kupwara and Ganderbal have, according to the CM, become beacons of inclusive growth. “When a traveller chooses a homestay, they are not just seeking authenticity; they are helping a local family gain economic independence. That, to me, is transformative tourism,” Abdullah said. The government’s targeted interventions, including training modules, easy credit access, and marketing support, have made the homestay initiative more than a policy checkbox. It has emerged as a central pillar in the UT’s rural development strategy, drawing praise from both national and international bodies.

Adventure, Golf, Wedding Tourism: A Diversified Portfolio: Abdullah also touched on Jammu & Kashmir’s growing appeal in niche tourism segments. “From high-altitude trekking in alpine lakes to international-standard skiing facilities, J&K is now a leading destination for adventure seekers,” he said. World-class golf courses in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Srinagar, and Jammu are attracting not only professionals but also celebrities and business executives. The emergence of wedding tourism—particularly in Srinagar and Gulmarg—is opening a whole new avenue for luxury experiences in the Valley. “We recently hosted high-profile weddings that have given our local economy a major boost,” the Chief Minister noted. “Our goal is to combine elegance with local tradition, creating memorable experiences for couples while empowering our craftspeople and service providers.”

Cinematic Kashmir; Bollywood’s Return: The Valley’s history with Indian cinema is well documented, and Abdullah was keen to underline its resurgence. “Bollywood is coming back, and so are independent filmmakers from across the country,” he said. The reintroduction of Kashmir as a cinematic landscape is not merely about aesthetics. According to the CM, the return of film crews creates employment opportunities for local guides, technicians, set builders, and transport providers. “The power of visual storytelling cannot be overstated,” he said. “Every film shot in Kashmir becomes a virtual invitation for millions to visit.”

National , Global Recognition: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also highlighted the awards and recognitions that J&K has earned in recent years. The SKOCH Silver Award for the Homestay Initiative, multiple awards under the Ministry of Tourism’s Rural Homestay categories, and recognition under the ‘Travel for LIFE’ program were all mentioned. Aru in Pahalgam being declared the ‘Best Tourism Village’ in the adventure category added further legitimacy to J&K’s emerging status as a powerhouse in responsible and innovative tourism practices. “These accolades are not just trophies; they are validations of a journey powered by resilience, innovation, and community spirit,” the CM said.

TTF Kolkata 2025;A Strategic Platform: With over 500 exhibitors from 25+ Indian states and 14+ countries, and over 5,500 verified trade professionals attending, TTF Kolkata 2025 is a powerhouse of networking, deal-making, and idea exchange. For Jammu & Kashmir, the fair represents an opportunity to forge meaningful partnerships with Eastern Indian markets and beyond. “The timing is perfect,” said a senior official from the J&K Tourism Department. “With the festive season approaching, we are expecting a spike in bookings from Kolkata, Siliguri, and Guwahati.” Omar Abdullah used the occasion to extend a personal invitation to travel companies, investors, and journalists. “Come and see for yourself. Jammu & Kashmir is ready, not just to host, but to inspire,” he said.

Tourism Safety Concerns After Pahalgam Attack: Despite the optimistic tone at the fair, Abdullah did not shy away from addressing the elephant in the room—the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, including pilgrims and tourists. “The incident was a tragedy that no words can fully capture,” he said in a press conference later in the day. When asked about delays in arrests, the Chief Minister defended the investigation process. “These things take time, but we are confident justice will be served,” he said. He also reassured potential visitors: “The situation is under control. Hotel occupancy might have dipped immediately after the attack, but we are seeing a healthy rebound. The Amarnath Yatra is going smoothly, and pilgrims have expressed satisfaction with the arrangements.”

On National Politics , J&K Statehood: Abdullah’s Kolkata visit also saw him weighing in on national political developments. Responding to questions about the Supreme Court’s go-ahead for the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, the CM said, “The Court has made its stand clear, and it must be respected.” On the fragile state of the INDIA opposition bloc, Omar offered a subtle rebuke without naming the Congress. “The largest stakeholder has the responsibility to keep the house in order,” he said. He also pushed back against BJP’s recent comparison between Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal and pre-Article 370 Jammu and Kashmir. “These analogies are lazy and unhelpful,” he said bluntly. However, he reserved his strongest political pitch for J&K’s statehood. “This is the only instance in Indian history where a full-fledged state was reduced to a Union Territory. We continue to demand that statehood be restored at the earliest,” he declared.

“Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated TTF Kolkata 2025, showcasing Jammu & Kashmir’s transformation into a year-round tourism destination with a focus on border tourism, women-led homestays, adventure, and cinematic revival. He emphasized tourism’s role in empowerment and economic growth while assuring safety after the Pahalgam attack. Abdullah reaffirmed the demand for J&K’s statehood and called for sustainable, inclusive tourism growth.”

A Strategic Recalibration Through Tourism: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s presence at TTF Kolkata-2025 marks more than just a symbolic gesture. It represents a strategic recalibration of how Jammu & Kashmir positions itself—geographically, economically, and emotionally—within the Indian travel imagination. In an era of political flux and post-pandemic recalibrations, tourism is being wielded as both a soft power tool and a hard economic strategy. Omar Abdullah’s articulation of tourism’s transformative potential—combined with a clear-eyed assessment of challenges such as security and infrastructure—presents a realistic yet hopeful roadmap for J&K’s future. As the dust settles on the Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan and business cards are exchanged, the real test begins back in the Valley: converting this renewed interest into lasting partnerships, sustainable growth, and unforgettable visitor experiences. If the vision laid out in Kolkata is anything to go by, the journey has already begun.

Kashmir Horizon View: As Jammu & Kashmir continues its transformative journey in the tourism sector, the need for sustained focus on infrastructure, safety, and inclusive growth remains paramount. Investments in connectivity—especially better road and air access to offbeat destinations—can unlock the region’s full potential. Moreover, community-based tourism, particularly women-led homestays and eco-friendly travel models, must be scaled up with policy incentives, training, and technology integration.  To rebuild trust after incidents like the Pahalgam attack, transparent communication and enhanced security protocols are essential. Cross-state collaborations, such as those fostered at TTF Kolkata, must evolve into long-term partnerships in travel packages, cultural exchanges, and joint tourism circuits. Additionally, diversifying offerings in wellness, adventure, MICE, and wedding tourism will ensure Jammu & Kashmir remains competitive in both domestic and international markets.  Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s participation in TTF Kolkata 2025 was more than ceremonial; it was a strategic assertion of Jammu & Kashmir’s place in India’s tourism future. By presenting a comprehensive vision anchored in sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation, he made a strong case for the Valley as a destination of peace, culture, and opportunity.  Despite recent challenges—especially the tragic Pahalgam attack—the region is witnessing signs of revival, with growing tourist interest and global recognition for its new tourism initiatives. The message from Kolkata was clear: Jammu & Kashmir is open, ready, and eager to welcome the world not just as a place of scenic beauty, but as a living mosaic of resilience, hospitality, and aspiration.
