Glaciers Met, Heat wave Induced Water Scarcity In Kashmir

Nestled quietly amidst the towering hills and dense forests of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district lies Gool, a serene town that remains one of the lesser-explored treasures of the region. While much of the Kashmir Valley swelters under temperatures soaring above 35°C during the peak of summer, Gool offers a cool, refreshing haven — a tranquil escape from the heat and the din of everyday life. Recently, I was fortunate to spend three unforgettable days in this picturesque town. What I discovered went far beyond my expectations — a land of lush meadows, crystal-clear mountain air, and kind-hearted people, where nature continues to reign in its purest form.
A Town Draped In Natural Splendor: From the moment I arrived, the gentle mountain breeze and the soothing scent of pine from the surrounding forests seemed to wash away every trace of fatigue and stress. Enclosed by verdant hills and crisscrossed by cool, murmuring streams, Gool radiates a rustic, untouched charm that instantly soothes both the mind and soul. Each morning, the sun would rise gracefully over the hills, painting the sky with delicate hues of gold and pink. As evening descended, a soft mist rolled in over the valleys, cloaking the landscape in a dreamlike serenity — a spectacle that would stir the heart of any nature lover.
Exploring The Jewels Of Gool: During my stay, I ventured to several enchanting spots, each revealing a unique facet of Gool’s natural beauty:
Ghora Gali; A Meadow Of Tranquility: A charming clearing embraced by dense forests and open pastures, Ghora Gali proved perfect for peaceful walks, leisurely picnics, and moments of quiet reflection. The chirping of birds, the soft rustle of leaves, and the occasional sight of wildflowers swaying in the breeze created a soothing symphony of nature.
Dagantop; A Panoramic Wonderland: Located about 10 kilometers from Gool, Dagantop left me utterly spellbound. Famous for its panoramic views of sweeping valleys and endless meadows, this spot is a paradise for both nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. The vast expanses of emerald green, dotted with vibrant wildflowers and kissed by the cool mountain air, made it an ideal place to pause, breathe deeply, and simply absorb the grandeur of nature. In winter, Dagantop transforms into a lively hub for snow sports, including skiing and sledging, making it a year-round destination worth visiting.
Rama Kunda: Solitude In Nature’s Lap: For those seeking solace and introspection, Rama Kunda is a peaceful retreat. This lesser-known gem, surrounded by lush greenery, invites visitors to immerse themselves in its tranquil ambiance — a place to listen to the whispers of nature and reconnect with one’s thoughts.

“In a world that is progressively overwhelmed by urban expansion and digital diversions, locations such as Gool serve as enduring reminders of nature’s subtle ability to heal, motivate, and rejuvenate. For individuals seeking tranquility, adventure, or genuine experiences away from the masses, Gool is a destination poised for exploration. It transcends being just a point on a map — it embodies an emotion, one that remains long after the journey concludes”.

Tatta Pani; The Healing Springs: On the final day of my trip, I visited Tatta Pani, famed for its natural sulphur springs, believed to possess therapeutic qualities for ailments such as joint pains and muscle soreness. From June to November, this natural wonder draws visitors from far and wide, all seeking the soothing embrace of its warm waters. The serene setting, coupled with the curative touch of these ancient springs, offered the perfect culmination to my journey — leaving both body and spirit rejuvenated.
Memorable Stays Amidst Nature: Adding to the charm of this sojourn were the places where we stayed. For the first three nights, we made our home at the quaint Forest Hut in Gool, a cozy retreat surrounded by towering pines and the gentle chorus of crickets at night. The experience of waking up to the cool, crisp air and the songs of birds was unmatched. On our final night, we stayed at Hotel Naik Guest House in Sangaldan — a comfortable, welcoming establishment that provided modern amenities without compromising the rustic charm of its natural surroundings. The warmth of the hosts and the simple, wholesome hospitality made our stay especially delightful.
A Note Of Heartfelt Gratitude: No journey is complete without the kindness and warmth of people, and my visit to Gool was made especially memorable thanks to my brother-in-law, Mr. Syed Abid (KPS), currently posted at Gool. His thoughtful hospitality, careful arrangements, and the camaraderie of his dedicated team — particularly Bashir Sahib and Amir — ensured that my experience was not just that of a traveler, but of a welcomed guest and friend. Their graciousness and efforts allowed me to explore Gool in ways few visitors ever do.
Conclusion; A Destination Worth Discovering: My Five-day journey to Gool, Ramban was not just an escape from the routine; it was a rediscovery of the simple, unspoiled beauty still thriving in the folds of our homeland. In a world increasingly consumed by urban sprawl and digital distractions, places like Gool stand as timeless reminders of nature’s quiet power to heal, inspire, and restore. For those in search of peace, adventure, or authentic experiences away from the crowds, Gool is a destination waiting to be discovered. It is not merely a place on the map — it is a feeling, one that lingers long after the journey ends.
