Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, commended the Village Defence Guards (VDGs) for their significant contributions to counter-terrorism efforts.
During an interaction with over 110 VDGs in R S Pura, he emphasized the importance of their vigilance and cooperation with police and security forces to enhance the security framework and promote peace in the region. Prabhat indicated that exceptional contributions by VDGs could lead to their induction into the regular police force. The DGP’s visit aimed to strengthen coordination, operational cooperation, and training among the VDGs. He acknowledged their vital role in the security grid and addressed their concerns, highlighting the unique challenges faced by police and security forces in Jammu, such as drone threats and infiltration attempts. Prabhat underscored the historical collaboration between border villagers and security forces in combating terrorism, asserting that their involvement is crucial for effective counter-terrorism operations. He also mentioned that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for VDGs have been established in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) to enhance border security. The DGP called for preventive strategies through training and community vigilance, reinforcing that VDG service is voluntary and does not guarantee employment, although exceptional service could lead to regular positions. Additionally, participants received guidance on the maintenance and safe handling of government-issued arms. The DGP recognized the VDGs as the first tier of the security grid, praising their intelligence-gathering capabilities and their involvement in past operations. The Inspector General of Police, Jammu, noted initiatives to streamline VDG operations, including assigning unique identities to members for better monitoring. Following the meeting, Prabhat conducted a security review at the Border Police Post Chakrohi and Police Station R S Pura, issuing directives to enhance manpower and strengthen the overall security framework in border areas.
