IIT Bhubaneswar Set to Become Semiconductor Skilling Hub with New ₹4.95 Crore ‘NaMo Lab’
NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has approved the establishment of the ‘NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory’ at IIT Bhubaneswar, a crucial move aimed at developing India’s indigenous talent pool for chip manufacturing and packaging.
The project, which has an estimated cost of ₹4.95 crore and will be funded under the MPLAD Scheme, is designed to equip the youth with industry-ready skills and significantly boost the nation’s rapidly growing semiconductor ecosystem.
Catalyst for ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’
The NaMo Semiconductor Lab is set to position IIT Bhubaneswar as a premier hub for semiconductor research and skilling. Its primary objective is to nurture talent that can cater to the burgeoning chip manufacturing and packaging units being established across Bharat.
The new lab directly supports the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’ initiatives, acting as a catalyst for the semiconductor industry. India already holds a strong position, being home to 20% of the global chip design talent. Furthermore, students from 295 universities are currently utilizing the latest Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, and twenty-eight student-designed chips from 20 institutes have already been taped out at SCL Mohali.
