Jammu : Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Monday convened a high-level meeting to address the frequent disruptions on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) caused by adverse weather conditions.
The meeting included key officials from various departments, including the Home and Public Works Departments, as well as representatives from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The Chief Secretary requested a comprehensive update on the current status of NH-44, which has seen partial restoration of traffic on a single-lane stretch affected by flash floods, with some vehicles being diverted through Mughal Road. Emphasizing the urgency of restoring full traffic flow, the Chief Secretary directed that restoration efforts be closely monitored at both divisional and district levels, with daily reports on traffic and repair progress. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing the movement of trucks carrying essential goods, including perishable food items and petroleum products, to prevent supply shortages. The Commissioner Secretary for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs assured that the stock of fuel and foodgrains in the valley was adequate, with additional supplies reaching the area following the highway’s partial reopening. The Chief Secretary also reviewed transportation arrangements for apple produce via parcel trains to markets outside J&K, instructing the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, to facilitate smooth transport for fruit growers and traders during the harvesting season. He reiterated the need for the NHAI to mobilize resources for the swift completion of NH-44 repairs, stressing the highway’s critical role in connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country. Furthermore, he called on Deputy Commissioners to oversee restoration activities in their areas and maintain communication with traffic authorities to ensure coordinated efforts. While acknowledging the utility of alternate routes like Mughal Road, the Chief Secretary reaffirmed that the full restoration of NH-44 remains the top priority.
