Despite flyover, key Sgr link to NH-44 remains clogged
Srinagar: The Bemina-Bypass road in Srinagar, a crucial link connecting key medical facilities and government offices to the NH-44 corridor, is experiencing severe traffic congestion throughout the day.
Locals said that the stretch from Bemina Crossing to the Bypass is heavily trafficked but too narrow to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles, leading to routine traffic snarls. This situation is particularly concerning for ambulances, which often get delayed due to the congestion. Despite the commissioning of the Bemina Bypass Flyover in June 2024, it has not significantly alleviated the ground-level traffic issues, which remain problematic during peak hours. Residents express frustration over the lack of progress regarding the proposed four-lanning of the road, which is reportedly planned under NABARD. There has been no official announcement regarding the project’s sanction, detailed project report, or timeline, leaving the community anxious about its future. Commuters frequently face delays of 30 to 40 minutes, emphasizing the need for wider roads and improved traffic management. The local population has called upon the administration to expedite road widening efforts, enhance traffic regulation, and increase the presence of traffic police at critical junctions to mitigate daily gridlock. Officials from the Roads & Buildings department have not provided comments on the status of the four-lanning proposal, further contributing to local concerns.
