Union Minister reviews flood-hit areas, orders swift relief & restoration Ops

Jammu : Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on Thursday announced four additional weather radars for Jammu & Kashmir under the ‘Mission Mausam’ initiative to enhance district-level weather forecasts and early warning systems. This decision follows a high-level review meeting focused on ongoing relief efforts in response to severe weather events, including heavy rainfall, cloudbursts, and flash floods affecting the region.
Dr Jitendra said that Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, in collaboration with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), aims to improve monitoring of extreme weather by installing these new radars, complementing the three already operational in the area. Dr. Singh emphasized the need for district-specific weather forecasts for North Indian states, including Jammu and Kashmir, and called for continuous monitoring to ensure timely alerts that could mitigate loss of life and property. He commended local administrations and civil society for their dedication in providing essential supplies such as rations, medicines, and shelter to those affected by the adverse weather. Dr. Singh also mentioned that he is utilizing his MP funds to send additional relief supplies, including ration kits and water filters, to support government efforts in preventing water-borne diseases.
The situation is being closely monitored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, with an inter-ministerial committee scheduled to visit Kathua for damage assessment and coordination of assistance. Local officials reported effective interventions in Doda, where timely actions prevented significant flooding, and in Udhampur, where relief camps are currently housing over 2,000 individuals. Restoration efforts for damaged roads and water supply systems are ongoing in various districts, with local authorities and community volunteers playing a crucial role in the coordinated response to the crisis. Dr. Singh assured that all necessary measures will be taken to provide comprehensive relief and rehabilitation across the affected areas.
