Mughal, SSG, Sinthan Roads closed, Kulgam Police organise langar at Qazigund for stranded drivers, passengers
Srinagar: Over 3,000 vehicles, primarily heavy motor vehicles, are stranded on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway due to landslides and shooting stones caused by recent heavy rainfall. All major routes in the Union Territory are closed, significantly impacting connectivity and the movement of essential supplies and passengers. Restoration efforts are ongoing, but adverse weather conditions and frequent landslides are hindering progress.
Officials here on Wednesday said that if the weather improves, two-lane traffic could be restored soon. In addition to the National Highway, other critical roads, including the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri Road and Mughal Road, are also blocked, further complicating the situation. The highway has not been fully operational since August 26, with specific areas suffering severe damage. Authorities are prioritizing the clearance of fruit-laden trucks from Kashmir, which are crucial for markets outside the region. In response to the crisis, local police have taken initiatives to support stranded drivers and commuters. Kulgam Police organized a community kitchen at Qazigund, providing meals and drinking water, which received positive feedback from the public. Similarly, Udhampur Police offered food and basic necessities to those affected, ensuring their safety until the roads are restored. These actions reflect the police’s commitment to community welfare during emergencies.
