New Delhi : The Election Commission of India on Friday announced that the election to choose the next Vice President of India will be held on September 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for the same day. The schedule sets the stage for the second-highest constitutional office in the country to be filled following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar.
According to the notification, August 21 is the last date for filing nominations, while August 25 is the final day for withdrawing candidature.
The Vice President’s office has remained vacant since July 21, when Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned citing health reasons on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” Dhankhar stated in his resignation letter.
The Election Commission said it had completed the preparation and finalised the Electoral College list for the upcoming Vice Presidential polls. In a post on social media platform X, the Commission noted that the members of the Electoral College have been listed in serial order and arranged alphabetically by their respective States or Union Territories.
The list will be made available for public purchase at a counter set up in the Election Commission’s office once the official notification is issued.
The Vice President of India is elected by an Electoral College consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament. The upcoming election is expected to draw political attention as parties begin strategising for what is considered a significant constitutional position.
