Chennai:  After being pulled up by the Supreme Court over the delay in granting assent to the Bills passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Governor R N Ravi on Saturday sparked off yet another row, this time for asking students to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram”at an event, triggering opposition and his removal from Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) founded by Rationalist leader E V R Periyar.

During an event in Madurai, the Governor had reportedly asked the students to chant Jai Shri Ram.

Strongly reacting to this, DK President K Veeramani, a staunch follower of Periyar, demanded his removal for promoting religious fanaticism.

In a social media post, he wrote “immediately remove the Governor who is acting with religious fanaticism even after the Supreme Court verdict”.

The fresh row comes in the back drop of the Apex Court severely indicting him in not giving assent to the 10 Bills passed in the Assembly and using its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, ruling that they were deemed to have been received his assent.

Following this, all the Ten Bills have become Acts and were notified in the government gazette.

It may be noted In a first of its kind development in India, Tamil Nadu has created a Legislative history by notifying 10 Acts in the Government Gazette without the assent of the Governor or the President after the Supreme Court in a landmark verdict said the Bills were deemed to have got the Governor’s assent.

The Bills were adopted in the State Assembly and sent to the Governor for his assent, who in turn forwarded to the President, but has not received the assent.

Following a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government against the inordinate delay in giving assent, the Apex Court,in a historic judgment, while indicting the Governor for the delay, said all the 10 Bills adopted in the Assembly were deemed to received the assent, using it powers under Article 142 of the Constitution.

Armed with the Apex Court order, the Tamil Nadu Law Department notified all the 10 Acts in the Government Gazette late on Saturday night.
