For the people of Kashmir, the idea of long-distance travel by train might be somewhat unfamiliar. With the region’s stunning landscapes, serene beauty, and often challenging road conditions, most residents are more accustomed to taxis, buses, and flights. But now, as the train service from Delhi to Kashmir becomes a reality, this development promises to change perceptions about train travel. As someone who initially held these reservations, I know trains weren’t the best option for long journeys. However, after over 15 years of traveling by train across India, I can confidently say that, far from being a challenge, train travel can be one of the safest, most comfortable, and most enriching ways to experience the diverse landscapes and cultures of the country. When I first started traveling by train, I, too, was hesitant. Stories of crowded compartments, delays, and general discomfort made me skeptical about whether it would be the right choice. But as I spent more time on trains, I realized that these initial concerns were mostly the result of a lack of awareness and preparation. In fact, train travel has offered a level of safety and reliability that often surpasses other modes of transportation. Yes, trains can sometimes experience delays, but improvements have made them increasingly reliable over the years. Now, as someone who has spent significant time traveling by train, here are some practical tips based on my experience that can make your train journey from Delhi to Kashmir more comfortable, safer, and enjoyable. Book Your Ticket in Advance- One of the best things you can do when planning your train journey is to book your tickets well in advance. Not only does this guarantee you a confirmed seat, but it also allows you to choose the best possible options in terms of class and time. If you cannot get a confirmed ticket in advance, the Tatkal system offers last-minute booking, but this can come at a premium, and not everyone successfully secures a Tatkal ticket. I strongly advise against traveling without a reservation. Unreserved travel is not only uncomfortable but also illegal. The last thing you want is to get caught by the Ticket Inspector (TT) and be fined or face unwanted scrutiny. Stay Cautious at Stations- Train stations, especially in larger cities like Delhi, can sometimes be chaotic. When arriving at the station, watch your surroundings, particularly if traveling with young children or elderly family members. Trains are fast and don’t always stop for long, so it’s important to wait until the train has come to a full halt before getting on or off. Rushing to board a train while it’s still moving can be dangerous. Stations can be crowded, so always stay close to your family, especially when handling luggage or navigating the crowd.
One of the joys of train travel is meeting people from all walks of life. Conversations with fellow passengers can make your journey more enjoyable and sometimes lead to lifelong friendships. Be kind, approachable, and respectful of others’ space. Avoid getting involved in unnecessary arguments or confrontations.
Safety on the Train- Once you’re on board, safety and comfort should remain your priority. Trains typically have toilets and dustbins, and snacks and beverages are regularly sold by vendors so you won’t go hungry. However, be cautious when purchasing food from the train vendors. It’s always safer to bring your snacks, especially if you’re concerned about hygiene. In the evening, be especially cautious when going to the washroom, as there may be the occasional petty thief. It’s important not to let children go to the bathroom alone. Always accompany them to ensure their safety. Keep your valuables close, and avoid leaving luggage unattended, even in your compartment. Interact with Fellow Passengers- One of the joys of train travel is meeting people from all walks of life. Conversations with fellow passengers can make your journey more enjoyable and sometimes lead to lifelong friendships. Be kind, approachable, and respectful of others’ space. Sharing stories and experiences can add an enriching dimension to your travel. Just few years before, some professors from Srilankawere on a visit to India, and my family had a solid interaction with them. We were happy to exchange gifts and are still using the tea bags they gifted. They have become very much connected with me after the years have passed. Avoid getting involved in unnecessary arguments or confrontations. Train journeys are often long, and maintaining a peaceful environment helps make the trip more pleasant for everyone. Avoid any form of addiction, like smoking, which is not only harmful but also inconsiderate to fellow passengers. Be Prepared for Emergencies- While train journeys are generally safe, there may be situations where you need to act swiftly. If there is a fire or another emergency, the train has an emergency chain you can pull to stop the train. However, this is a serious action and should only be used in emergencies. Misuse of the emergency chain can result in a fine or other legal consequences. Always be mindful of the rules, but don’t hesitate to take necessary action if lives are at risk.
Keep Trains Clean and Safe- This is where our collective responsibility comes in. It’s essential to keep trains clean and safe, not just for ourselves but for others, too. Trains are often seen as a microcosm of the areas they travel through, and maintaining cleanliness directly impacts tourism and the standard of living in the regions they pass through, like Kashmir. Dirty trains reflect poorly on the beautiful landscapes they connect and could affect visitors’ perceptions. Dispose of your waste responsibly, avoid littering, and take your trash with you if necessary. Small actions, like cleaning up after ourselves, contribute to the overall appeal of the journey and help preserve the region’s pristine reputation. Enjoy the Journey and Relax- Perhaps the most important lesson I’ve learned after years of traveling by train is to relax and enjoy the journey. Trains offer a unique vantage point, allowing you to witness the changing landscapes, from the bustling streets of Delhi to the picturesque hills and valleys of Kashmir. It’s a great opportunity to reflect, read, or engage with the world around you. So, as you plan your journey, remember to stay prepared, remain cautious, and, most importantly, enjoy the ride. The train journey may be the beginning of a whole new adventure for you—and a way to experience the beauty of Kashmir from a completely different perspective. One must take great care and keep your personal property and the space around you safe to ensure that train travel in Kashmir remains a pleasant and sustainable option for years to come.
