For dairy farmers in Kashmir, maintaining a healthy and productive herd depends not only on milk production but also on successful reproduction. A cow that fails to conceive on time can increase the cost of dairy farming and reduce the overall productivity of a small farm. Under Kashmiri conditions, reproductive problems are influenced by several factors, including climate, nutrition, animal health, housing and farm management.
Kashmir’s cold winters can have a direct and indirect impact on cattle. During the winter months, animals often remain indoors for longer periods. Poor ventilation, damp floors, overcrowding and inadequate sunlight can affect their general health. When animals are under stress or their nutritional needs are not properly met, their reproductive performance can also suffer.
Nutrition is perhaps one of the most important factors affecting fertility. Dairy cows require adequate energy, protein, minerals and vitamins, particularly during pregnancy and after calving. A cow producing large quantities of milk uses considerable energy. If the feed does not provide enough energy to meet this demand, the animal can lose body condition and may take longer to return to normal reproductive activity after calving.
Mineral deficiencies can also contribute to reproductive problems. Calcium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, selenium and other nutrients play important roles in maintaining animal health and fertility. In Kashmir, the availability and quality of green fodder changes with the seasons, making balanced feeding especially important during the winter months.
Another common challenge is the failure to detect heat at the appropriate time. A cow has to be inseminated during the correct period of its reproductive cycle for conception to occur. However, the signs of heat can sometimes be weak or easily missed, particularly when cattle are kept indoors. Missed heat means delayed breeding, which can increase the interval between calving and reduce the economic returns from dairy farming.
Repeated failure to conceive is another concern. When a cow does not become pregnant after several inseminations, farmers may have to spend more on breeding and veterinary services while continuing to feed an animal that is not producing a calf. Timely pregnancy diagnosis can help identify such cases and allow appropriate treatment or management decisions.

Problems after calving can also affect future fertility. Difficult births, retained placenta and infections of the uterus can delay the return to normal reproductive activity. Poor hygiene around calving can increase the risk of infection. Farmers therefore need to pay close attention to cows during the period immediately before and after calving.
Although Kashmir is known for its cold climate, increasing summer temperatures are another issue that deserves attention. Heat stress can reduce feed intake, affect milk production and interfere with normal reproductive behaviour. Changes in weather patterns may make heat stress increasingly relevant to dairy farmers in the region.
Access to timely veterinary services is equally important. Farmers in remote areas may face difficulties in obtaining reproductive health services such as artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis and treatment of reproductive disorders. Strengthening veterinary outreach and farmer awareness can help address these gaps.
Simple management practices can make a significant difference. Farmers should provide balanced feed, clean drinking water, proper housing and adequate ventilation. Cattle sheds should be kept clean and dry, and animals should be observed regularly for signs of heat, illness or abnormal behaviour.
Maintaining basic records of calving, heat, insemination and pregnancy can also help farmers and veterinarians identify recurring problems.
Reproductive health should therefore be treated as an essential part of dairy management rather than something considered only when a cow fails to conceive. Better nutrition, improved housing, timely veterinary care and greater awareness among farmers can improve fertility and reduce economic losses.
For Kashmir’s dairy sector, improving reproductive efficiency is not simply about increasing the number of calves. It is about building healthier, more productive and economically sustainable herds that can support the livelihoods of farming families across the region.
