Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday commended the impressive voter turnout in the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, describing it as a clear repudiation of parties that have supported stone-pelters and militancy.
Addressing a vibrant rally in Srinagar, PM Modi declared, “The massive voter turnout in the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections signifies a strong rejection of parties that have sympathized with stone-pelters and militancy. The people here have shown their faith in my promise of a safe and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir. I extend my heartfelt thanks to those who came to Srinagar to seek blessings.” The first phase of voting, held on September 18, saw a turnout of 61.13 percent across 24 constituencies in seven districts. This turnout is a testament to the changing political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.
PM Modi further asserted that he would not allow the Abdullahs, Muftis, and Gandhis to destroy another generation. “I am committed to restoring peace in Jammu and Kashmir. I will not let another generation be lost to the failures of these three families. Today, schools and colleges are functioning smoothly throughout the region. Children have access to pens, books, and laptops. There are no longer reports of school fires; instead, we are seeing the construction of new schools, colleges, AIIMS, medical colleges, and IITs,” he stated. He highlighted the transformation of Lal Chowk, which under the BJP-led central government, has shifted from being a dangerous place where hoisting the national flag was risky to a bustling, vibrant destination attracting tourists from across the country and the world. “There was a time when hoisting the tricolor at Lal Chowk was a perilous act. For years, people were afraid to visit Lal Chowk. Now, the situation has changed dramatically. The markets of Srinagar are alive with the festive spirit of both Eid and Diwali. Lal Chowk remains busy till late evening, welcoming tourists from all over,” Modi said.
PM Modi noted the resilience of the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, who he said have suffered under the rule of the three families but are now rising to challenge the status quo. “The youth have suffered greatly during the rule of these three families, but now they are standing up against them,” he added. He criticized the previous political regimes for their failure to establish educational institutions and for contributing to the region’s turmoil. “Schools that were destroyed in Kashmir were part of a deliberate strategy by these political parties to foster hatred. They failed to build institutions and, for their own benefit, ruined the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth. I promise to keep Jammu and Kashmir free from t militancy and will not allow the new generation to be destroyed by these three political parties,” Modi asserted.
In the last five years, the Prime Minister has prioritized education, enrolling 50,000 students who were previously deprived of education. “We now have 1.5 lakh students in primary schools, and 2.5 lakh schools are being upgraded. AIIMS is being established, and 1,100 new seats have been created in medical colleges, with an additional 1,600 seats in paramedical courses. The young generations are growing stronger under BJP rule,” he explained.
Modi criticized the three families for undermining Kashmiryat and democracy. “These families have worked to stifle democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. They fear new participants in the democratic process, worried that fresh faces will challenge their dominance. This led to a loss of interest in democracy among the people,” he said. He highlighted the significant changes in Kashmir’s political landscape, including the shift to door-to-door campaigning and heightened political engagement. “So much has changed in Kashmir. Campaigns are now held late into the night, and people believe their vote can strengthen democracy in the region. Leaders like Er. Aijaz are challenging the three families of Kashmir,” Modi noted. The Prime Minister also praised the festive atmosphere in Lal Chowk, stating, “Now we see the hustle and bustle in Lal Chowk. Diwali and Eid are celebrated with great enthusiasm. This transformation is not due to Modi, but thanks to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”
Concluding his speech, PM Modi reaffirmed his commitment to the region’s future, saying, “We have promised that Jammu and Kashmir will become a state, and it is the BJP that will make this a reality. You grow saffron and agriculture here. The lotus will enhance its beauty.” With these closing remarks, PM Modi underscored his dedication to the region’s development and the BJP’s role in shaping its future.
