Centre clears appointment of Justice N Kotiswar Singh as Judge of Supreme Court

Srinagar, July 16: The Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India on Tuesday cleared appointment of Justice N Kotishwar Singh, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

A notification issued in the Gazette of India reads, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office”.
Hailing from Manipur, Justice N Kotiswar Singh has been serving as Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh High Court since February 2023. He would be the first Supreme Court judge from the State.

Born on March 1, 1963 at Imphal IN Manipur, Singh briefly practiced before the Supreme Court of India before shifting to the Gauhati High Court. He was designated a Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court in 2008.

In 2011, Justice Singh was sworn in as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court and in 2012, he was made a permanent judge.

He was appointed a judge of the Manipur High Court upon its creation in the year 2013. He was later transferred to the Gauahti High Court in 2018.
