In Udhampur’s Triangular Contest BJP-Cong Showdown

The initial stage of voting for the Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency is scheduled for April 19, with the electoral battle heating up as more than 10 candidates throw their hats in the ring. The spotlight, however, is on the fierce competition between the BJP’s Jitendra Singh and the Congress’s Lal Singh.

After a decade-long hiatus from the Congress, Lal Singh made his return to the party just last month. His political journey saw him switching allegiances from the Congress to the BJP prior to the 2014 general elections, where he significantly contributed to Jitendra Singh’s triumph for the BJP. The electoral fray has been further complicated by the entrance of G M Saroori of the Democratic Azad Party (DAP), introducing a tripartite contest. Despite the crowded field of 12 candidates, the primary electoral tussle is anticipated to be a face-off between the BJP and Congress representatives. In the 2019 general elections, BJP’s Jitendra Singh clinched the Udhampur seat by a notable margin, besting Congress’s Vikramaditya Singh by more than 350,000 votes. As Dr. Singh aims to emulate his previous success, he faces the formidable challenge of living up to his 2019 performance, which was bolstered by the widespread support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the time. During those elections, Singh emerged victorious with a tally of 7.24 lakh votes, securing a commanding 61.38% of the total vote share, while his Congress opponent garnered 3.67 lakh votes, marking a significant victory margin. Recently Dr Jitendra Singh said that Udhampur has emerged among India’s top three districts in rural road construction under Central PMGSY scheme and this has been possible only because of the prioritisation given by the government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last 10 years. Dr Jitendra Singh the two-time MP from Udhampur-Kathua is aiming for a hat-trick of wins and thanks the people for their faith in him while seeking their blessings for yet another term. The Udhampur-Kathua Lok Sabha constituency was once a stronghold of the Congress party. Conversely, Lal Singh, a figure who has captured the Udhampur seat for Congress twice before, shifted allegiances to the BJP, only to resign amid controversy surrounding his participation in a contentious rally. With a political career marked by switches and significant roles, including founding the Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan Party (DSSP) in 2018 aimed at preserving Jammu’s indigenous identity, Lal Singh has been a prominent advocate for reinstating special status to Jammu and Kashmir akin to Article 371, emphasizing job and land security. His political journey includes a victory over BJP stalwart Prof Chaman Lal Gupta in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and a tenure as a BJP MLA and a cabinet minister in the PDP-BJP government until its dissolution in 2018.

“Dr Jitendra Singh the two-time MP from Udhampur-Kathua is aiming for a hat-trick of wins and thanks the people for their faith in him while seeking their blessings for yet another term. Despite his endeavors, Lal Singh faced defeat in both the Jammu and Udhampur constituencies in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. G M Saroori, another key contender from the Democratic Azad Party (DPAP), brings a rich political background to the fore. Having served as a minister and won his assembly seat three times, Saroori’s campaign has been bolstered by DPAP Chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad’s critique of the Article 370 removal, resonating with many.  Saroori, praised by Azad for his leadership and commitment, represents DPAP’s commitment to addressing public issues. As the Udhampur-Doda region gears up for the April 19 election, with over 16 lakh registered voters, the political dynamics are intriguing.  The constituency is spread across 16 Assembly segments, will see a significant electoral battle, especially since major regional parties like the NC and PDP have stepped back, potentially consolidating support for the Congress candidate. Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in five phases with voting in each of the five parliamentary constituencies to be held in a separate phase. Polling in the five Lok Sabha constituencies will be held on April 19 (Udhampur), April 26 (Jammu), May 7 (Anantnag), May 13 (Srinagar) and May 20 (Baramulla).

“Choosing leaders with a vision for sustainable and inclusive development is crucial. Voters should consider which candidates are likely to foster long-term prosperity and social cohesion in the region, rather than focusing solely on short-term gains. The electoral process is the cornerstone of democracy, providing an opportunity for every eligible voter to have a say in the future direction of their community and country. By making informed, thoughtful decisions at the polls, voters can contribute to the election of representatives who truly serve the public interest and promote the overall development of the Udhampur-Doda constituency.”

Kashmir Horizon View: As the Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency gears up for its electoral contest, voters stand at a crucial juncture where their decisions will shape the future governance and development trajectory of their region. The diverse slate of candidates and the complex socio-political issues at play demand a thoughtful approach from the electorate. Voters should strive to gather comprehensive information about all candidates, including their political history, party manifestos, and proposed policies. Understanding each candidate’s stance on critical issues such as land rights, employment, development projects, and social harmony is essential. It’s vital for voters to consider the broader needs of their community, including infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Voting should reflect not just individual preferences but also what is best for community welfare and progress. Assessing the candidates’ past performance in office or their contributions to society can offer insights into their potential effectiveness and commitment. Voters should look at the tangible outcomes of the candidates’ previous tenures or initiatives. Candidates who have demonstrated integrity, transparency, and accountability in their political or professional careers deserve consideration. Electing representatives who are committed to ethical governance can help ensure that the constituency’s interests are safeguarded. Active participation goes beyond just casting votes. Engaging in discussions, attending rallies or public meetings, and even using social media platforms to spread awareness and encourage civic participation are crucial steps. Educating oneself and others about the importance of every single vote can strengthen democracy. While party affiliations play a significant role in elections, it’s important for voters to also consider the individual qualities and capabilities of the candidates. Sometimes, a candidate’s personal commitment and vision for the region may align more closely with voters’ aspirations than the broader party agenda. Candidates often make numerous promises during campaigns. Voters should critically evaluate the feasibility of these promises and consider the candidates’ plans for fulfilling them. Realistic, well-thought-out proposals are more likely to result in actual benefits for the constituency. Choosing leaders with a vision for sustainable and inclusive development is crucial. Voters should consider which candidates are likely to foster long-term prosperity and social cohesion in the region, rather than focusing solely on short-term gains. The electoral process is the cornerstone of democracy, providing an opportunity for every eligible voter to have a say in the future direction of their community and country. By making informed, thoughtful decisions at the polls, voters can contribute to the election of representatives who truly serve the public interest and promote the overall development of the Udhampur-Doda constituency. Engaging in the democratic process with responsibility and foresight can help ensure a brighter future for all residents.
