Srinagar: The inhabitants of Al Kareem Colony Humhama area of Srinagar on Saturday expressed their resentment against the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) for failing to macadamise Lane 2 for the past several years, leaving people in trouble.
A delegation of local inhabitants told Kashmir Horizon that they are neglected by the authorities for the past several years and due to the absence of basic facilities, people are facing tremendous problems. Expressing dismay over the dilapidated condition of lane road in the locality, Mohammad Subhan, a resident said last year, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) constructed a drain but the road was not repaired and was left abandoned.
“We approached SMC many times, but there was not any response from them. During emergencies we have to take alternative routes to reach on the main road,” he said. Another resident Ghulam Nabi said that during rains the potholes and ditches remain filled with mud and water. “Our children embark on a daily journey to school, navigating through the treacherous path filled with puddles and broken pavement. It’s disheartening to witness the place we call home succumb to such neglect,” she said.
Another local Sajad said that it is not just about inconvenience. We have reached out to the SMC officials, but it feels like our pleas are lost in a bureaucratic maze,” he added. In the midst of these grievances, the residents are left yearning for a tangible solution, a transformation of Lane 2 from a forgotten alley to a smoothly paved thoroughfare. Residents demanded that the lane road in the colony should be repaired as soon as possible so that they cannot suffer anymore. “Government spends crores for macadamization of roads. But there is nothing for us. The lanes have not been for the past six years,” they said. The said that the condition of the road never improved due to the lackadaisical attitude of the concerned authorities. Meanwhile, in the planning section of the SMC, the estimate for drainage in Al-Kareem Colony sits untouched, buried beneath layers of bureaucratic processes and delays. SMC Commissioner Athar Amir Khan was not available for his comments on the issue.
