Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday constituted a judicial commission for a detailed probe into Prayagraj incident in which mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azeem alias Ashraf were killed by three shooters while being taken for medical examination, an official spokesman said.

The spokesman said that following directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath the Home Department has issued an order in this regard. The commission has been constituted under the Commission of Inquiry Act 1952.

As per the order the commission will be headed by the retired judge of Allahabad High Court Justice Arvind Kumar Tripathi (II). Former Director General of Police (DGP) Subesh Kumar Singh and retired judge Brijesh Kumar Soni have been appointed as the members of the commission.

The spokesman said that the commission will complete its probe into the incident within two months and will submit its report with the state government. It may be noted that Atiq and Ashraf were shot dead while they were being taken for medical examination to Colvin hospital in police custody on Saturday night.

They were shot by three assailants, who came in the guise of media persons and were later nabbed by the police from the spot. Atiq and Ashraf were remanded to police custody in connection with murder of Umesh Pal, the main witness in Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal.

Advocate Umesh Pal and his two gunners were shot in front of his house in Sulem Sarai area under Dhoomanganj police station on February 24. Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal lodged a case against Atiq, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons and nine others for murder.

It may be mentioned that while reviewing the situation after Atiq and Arshad’s murder, CM Yogi had ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter on Saturday night and also directed to constitute a three member judicial commission.
