Bhubaneswar: A successful training launch of a Short-Range Ballistic Missile, Prithvi-II was carried out on Wednesday from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
A well-established system, Prithvi-II missile, has been an integral part of India’s nuclear deterrence.
Official sources said the missile struck its target with high accuracy.
The user training launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile.
The indigenously built missile, developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) was test fired from a mobile launcher from the ITR complex.
ITR sources said the missile could be used as a tactical battlefield weapon. Although it has a range of 350 Kms with a 500 kg warhead, the payload could be increased to 1000 kg.
Prithivi is one of the five missiles under various stages of development as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme(IGMDP).
Several scientists of the DRDO and officials of the ITR were present during the launching of Prithvi-II Missile.
