Meerut (UP): Former minister Haji Yaqoob Qureshi and his son Imran have been arrested by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Meerut police with the help of Delhi police from Chandni Mahal area, a senior officer said here on Saturday.

Superintendent of Police (Crime) Amit Kumar said that Yaqoob, who was minister in Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government, and his son were produced in the court from where they have been remanded to judicial custody and sent to jail. “Yaqoob and Imran were arrested from a flat where they were living on rent in Chandni Mahal area in Delhi late on Friday night,” he said.

He said that Yaqoob and Imran were brought to Kharkhoda police station and quizzed. “The police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 each on the arrest of Yaqoob and Imran,” he said.

It may be noted that a case against 17 people, including former minister Yaqoob Qureshi, sons Imran, Firoz and wife, was lodged on March 31, 2022 on charges of packaging and processing meat without permission in Al Fahim Meatex Private Limited in Alipur area under Kharkhoda police station.

The police had already arrested Yaqoob’s second son Firoz and sent him to jail. “Haji Yaqoob and Imran were absconding and were changing their locations in Rajasthan and Delhi frequently to hide from the police,” sources said.
