Muslim leadership can’t stop reforms by ‘saffronisation scare crow’, says Arif Mohd Khan on triple talaq

New Delhi: Former Union Minister Arif Mohammad Khan, who has hailed yesterday’s Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq, today hit out at those expressing concern about ‘’saffronisation’’, saying reform in the Muslim community could no be stopped by this ‘’scare crow’’ the leadership would put up all the time.
‘’If any practice among Muslims is against the demands of social justice and the tenets of Qur’an itself, it should go irrespective of which party was its advocate,’’ Mr Khan said talking to UNI on the apex court judgement by a five-judge Constitution bench which has declared the practice of instant talaq pronounced in quick succession as unconstitutional and unislamic.
‘’If one went by the theory of saffronisation threat, Muslim community would resist all reform till a BJP government was in power, and when a Congress government would be in power, it would only listen to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, so I really wonder where the community leadership is headed to,’’ said the former union minister of state for home.
Mr Khan had resigned as union minister in protest when the then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi made Parliament overturn the SC judgement in the Shah Bano case following pressure from the Muslim clergy.
He said it was unfortunate that the secular parties including the Left had been silent on the issue.
