New Delhi: Supreme Court today allowed denotification of highways within city limits to circumvent highway liquor ban. A three judge bench comprising Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice L Nageswar Rao and Justice DY Chandrachud, dismissed a plea, filed by ‘Arrive Safe Society of Chandigarh’ challenging Chandigarh administration’s decision.
The Chandigarh administration had denotified stretches of highways within city limits. The Chandigarh administration had taken the decision to circumvent the apex court’s highway liquor ban. The apex court observed that the denotification could have been illegitimate if done outside city limits. “We don’t see any violation of our orders as only stretches falling within city were denotified,” the Bench said in its order.
