New Delhi, May 21: Notwithstanding the fact that the Election Commission (EC) considers introduction of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) as a ‘positive electoral reform’, the poll panel has ruled out considering online voting system.
“For the time being we are not considering this,” the Chief Election Commissioner Dr Nasim Zaidi told reporters here yesterday.
The issue was discussed at the Commission a few years ago and a committee had examined the issue too.
Ironically, the poll panel, which claims of setting high ever-higher standards of efficient, smooth and professional conduct of elections and ’embracing’ the latest technological advancement in fine-tuning the election process, says the E-voting or online voting system would not be a practical suggestion.
“One of the reasons is this issue of hacking,” Dr Zaidi said even as he defended very strongly that Indian EVMs are tamper-proof and cannot be hacked.
