Eviction from Govt residential premises made easy

New Delhi, May 17: The Cabinet today cleared amendment in a law that would enable speedy eviction of unauthorised occupants from government residential accommodations allotted for a fixed tenure or till they hold an office.
The decision to change the law has been taken as non-vacation of such residences leads to unavailability of houses to new incumbents, Power, Coal, Renergy and Mines Minister Piyush Goyal said here while briefing media about Cabinet decision.
The amendment has been made in Section 2 and Section 3 of the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971 (PPE Act, 1971).
The Government has to evict unauthorised occupants from Government accommodations under the provisions of PPE Act, 1971.
However, the eviction proceedings take unusually long time, thereby reducing the availability of government accommodations to new incumbents After the amended law comes into force, the Estate Officer can make such inquiry as he deems expedient in the circumstances of the case and thus do not have to follow the elaborate procedures prescribed as per sections 4, 5 and 7 of the Act.
