Shopian: On the directions of Deputy Commissioner, Dr Owais Ahmed, R&B department has launched night snow lifting drive in Shopian town from Sunday night.
Officials said with the heavy snowfall on last Wednesday, most of the roads and footpaths in the town were repeatedly getting blocked due to snow falling from rooftops of the residential houses and commercial structures.
They said the snow clearance drive in night was launched to avoid any disturbance to people.
The drive started at around 8 pm at night and continued till 6 am in the morning.
The nocturnal drive will ensure smooth passage of commuters and vehicles throughout Shopian town. Officials from department said Executive Engineer Roads and Buildings, Zahoor Ahmad along with engineers and technical staff was monitoring the snow clearnence drive throughout the night.
Usually during the snow clearance, the road is cleared for vehicles while the snow heaps on the sides of the road is removed much later. But on the directions of the Deputy Commissioner, the process was expedited and snow accumulated on the sides of the roads and footpaths was removed within one night.
This move of administration was widely appreciated by the people. They said despite the heavy snowfall, the roads were cleared within record time. “Now, this drive will further give us relief,” locals said. They also said this kind of operation was observed in Shopian town for the first time.
