I recently had the privilege of attending an expert lecture that turned out to be far more than an academic session. While the discussion on innovation and research was insightful, it was the professor’s personal journey that left an indelible mark on my mind.
Rather than beginning with technical concepts, the professor shared the story of his life. As he revisited the struggles of his early years, emotions overtook him. His eyes filled with tears, and for a few moments, silence conveyed what words never could. Those tears reflected years of sacrifice, rejection, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in his dreams.
His journey itself was filled with unexpected turns. As a student, he aspired to become an engineer, but his family wanted him to join and eventually take care of the family business. At the same time, he excelled in both Biology and Mathematics. After securing outstanding marks, family friends strongly encouraged him to pursue medicine and become a doctor. Caught between expectations and his own aspirations, he had to overcome numerous challenges before he could finally pursue the path he truly desired.
He also shared that becoming a professor in India was never part of his plans. His perception was that professors had limited opportunities to explore new ideas and were increasingly occupied with administrative responsibilities. However, this perception changed completely after he moved abroad, where he experienced an academic environment that encouraged exploration, innovation, research, collaboration, and intellectual freedom. It was then that he discovered teaching and research could together become a deeply fulfilling career.
Before entering academia, he worked in industry. Although the job offered stability, the work soon became repetitive, and he realized he was no longer enjoying what he was doing. Rather than settling into comfort, he made the difficult decision to change direction in search of work that challenged him intellectually and aligned with his passion for learning and discovery.
He spoke about beginning his career with a modestly paid job while aspiring to pursue higher education abroad. Financial constraints made that dream seem almost impossible until an unexpected scholarship opened the doors to Ireland. Even there, success was anything but easy. During an important interview, he found himself unable to answer several technical questions. Instead of pretending, he honestly admitted that he was unprepared and requested another opportunity after studying further. His honesty impressed the interview panel, and that moment became a turning point in his journey.
“Dream beyond your present circumstances and never allow your background or the expectations of others to define your future. The path you ultimately choose should reflect your passion and purpose.”
His years in Ireland brought another life lesson. Determined to remain at the top, he constantly pushed himself to achieve more. Seeing his relentless pursuit of excellence, someone remarked, “You are an overachiever. Achieve, but don’t forget to enjoy life.” That simple advice transformed his perspective. Success, he realized, is not only about reaching the destination but also about appreciating the journey.
After gaining valuable research experience in Ireland, he once again pursued his dream of moving to the United States. Initially, his application failed to convince a professor. It appeared that another opportunity had slipped away. However, an unexpected conversation between that professor and his research supervisor in Ireland changed everything. Learning about his abilities, commitment, and research potential, the professor reconsidered his application. A single recommendation altered the course of his career and eventually led him to one of the world’s leading universities.
Listening to his story, I found myself relating to many of its moments. It reinforced my belief that while luck certainly plays a role in life, it only creates opportunities. It is passion, relentless hard work, honesty, resilience, and the courage to keep making sincere attempts that transform those opportunities into success.
For students, the professor’s journey offers timeless lessons. Dream beyond your present circumstances and never allow your background or the expectations of others to define your future. The path you ultimately choose should reflect your passion and purpose. Develop junoon—the passion that keeps you moving when the journey becomes difficult. Do not hesitate to change direction if your work no longer excites or challenges you. Be honest, even when admitting your shortcomings, because integrity often opens doors that talent alone cannot. Value your mentors and the relationships you build, as one genuine recommendation can change the direction of your life. Strive for excellence, but do not let the pursuit of success rob you of the joy of living. Above all, never stop making sincere attempts. Rejections are temporary, failures are lessons, and opportunities often arrive unexpectedly.
