This week, Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, made an impactful visit to the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Pavilion at the Outbound Travel Mart (OTM) 2025, Asia’s largest travel trade show, hosted at the prestigious Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. The event, which runs from January 30 to February 1, has gathered exhibitors, travel trade operators, and buyers from around the globe, giving the region an invaluable platform to showcase its extraordinary tourism potential.

OTM 2025;A Platform For J&K’s Tourism Potential: The OTM, one of the leading events for the global travel and tourism industry, saw an overwhelming response this year, with more than 120 tourism trade and travel operators representing Jammu and Kashmir at the exhibition. This collective effort highlights the region’s vast tourism offerings, from its awe-inspiring landscapes to its diverse cultural heritage. Jammu and Kashmir has always been a favorite destination for travelers worldwide, offering a variety of experiences that range from its scenic beauty to adventure sports, and from spiritual pilgrimage to cultural exploration.

CM Omar’s Visit; Interactions, Insights: During his visit to the pavilion, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah engaged with various stakeholders, including travel operators, artisans, and tourism officials, to learn more about their experiences and the preparations made for the event. He took a close look at how the state’s offerings were presented, giving special attention to the creative and innovative approaches used to showcase the multifaceted appeal of Jammu and Kashmir.

Commitment To Tourism Promotion: The Chief Minister expressed his pride in the strong presentation of Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism offerings, highlighting the significance of tourism as a core focus of the state government’s development agenda. “Tourism is one of the top priorities of my government, and we are committed to positioning Jammu and Kashmir as a leading global tourism destination,” said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. CM’s commitment to tourism promotion is evident as he emphasizes the importance of actively participating in major travel marts and exhibitions, both domestically and internationally, to ensure that Jammu and Kashmir remains firmly on the map of prominent global tourism spots. In addition to the ongoing support for the tourism industry, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made it clear that his government would continue to prioritize tourism infrastructure development, including transportation, hospitality services, and marketing efforts. As part of these plans, he instructed the Tourism Department to maximize its outreach efforts by participating in key travel fairs across the country and internationally.

Stakeholder Optimism For New Collaborations: During his visit, Chief Minister Abdullah was accompanied by key officials, including Advisor to the CM Nasir Aslam Wani, Additional Chief Secretary to the CM Dheeraj Gupta, Director of Tourism Kashmir, and Managing Director of JKTDC.  The stakeholders present at the event expressed optimism about the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism industry and the potential for establishing new partnerships and collaborations. They believe that such efforts will help attract more visitors to the region, providing a boost to the local economy and creating opportunities for local communities.

Preparations Underway For Khelo India Winter Games Positioning J&K as a Winter Sports Hub: In a parallel effort to bolster the region’s tourism and sports sectors, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparations for the 5th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG), set to take place from February 22 to 25, 2025, at the iconic Gulmarg ski resort. The meeting aimed to ensure that the event would run smoothly and reinforce Jammu and Kashmir’s reputation as a top destination for winter sports tourism.

A Two-Phase Event; Ladakh and Gulmarg: The Khelo India Winter Games, which is part of the Government of India’s initiative to promote sports and discover young talent, has become a significant event in the region. The 2025 edition of the games will take place in two phases: one in Ladakh, which was held from January 23 to 27, and the second in Gulmarg.  The Gulmarg phase is expected to attract more than 1,000 athletes from 35 states, Union Territories, and sports boards, competing in a range of winter sports such as alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboarding, ski mountaineering, and snowshoe racing, a demonstration sport for this edition.

Key Officials Review Logistical, Organizational Arrangements: The meeting involved several high-ranking officials, including the Minister for Youth Services & Sports Satish Sharma, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, and senior police officers, as well as heads of various departments. They discussed the organizational and logistical arrangements for the event, which has received significant funding from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports of the Government of India.

The Khelo India Mascot;A Snow Leopard: One of the key highlights of the preparations was the unveiling of the event’s mascot, a snow leopard, which symbolizes the rich biodiversity of the region and underscores Jammu and Kashmir’s commitment to conservation. The snow leopard will play a prominent role in the event’s promotional efforts, along with a carefully designed logo that embodies the spirit of winter sports and the local culture.

Publicity Efforts; Spreading the Word Across India: Publicity for the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 has been in full swing, with the event’s promotional material being displayed across major cities such as Delhi, Srinagar, Jammu, and Amritsar. Hoardings, along with the mascot’s displays, will make sure that the games receive the attention they deserve.  In addition to these efforts, a multimedia campaign involving print, electronic, and social media outlets is set to take place, with live television coverage on DD Sports and online streaming on various platforms. The Department of Information and Public Relations has also worked closely with the organizing committee to ensure comprehensive media coverage.

Community Engagement;“Aes Che Praraan”: A key feature of the 2025 edition of the Khelo India Winter Games is its focus on community engagement. The slogan “Aes Che Praraan” (We Are Waiting), is aimed at involving local communities in the excitement of the event, encouraging them to be part of the experience and witness firsthand the energy and talent of the athletes. The involvement of the local population is crucial in fostering a sense of pride and ownership in the event and its impact on the region.

Comprehensive Preparations for a Successful Event: The preparation for the event is comprehensive, with special attention being paid to logistical aspects such as transportation, traffic management, health services, sanitation, food arrangements, and water supply. A help desk will be set up at the airport in Srinagar to assist teams and officials arriving on February 21, 2025. Furthermore, cultural programs that showcase the region’s traditions, music, and cuisine will be organized to provide participants and visitors with a true taste of Kashmir’s vibrant heritage.

“Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is confident that Jammu and Kashmir will continue to thrive as a top tourist and sports destination. With the right mix of government support, infrastructure development, and active engagement with stakeholders, the region is poised to attract more international events and collaborations in the coming years. These efforts will not only boost the economy but also bring the region into the spotlight as a destination for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and sports enthusiasts from across the world.”

Commitment To Enhance Sports, Tourism Infra: The hosting of major events like the Khelo India Winter Games and Jammu and Kashmir’s active participation in global travel trade fairs such as OTM 2025 demonstrate the government’s commitment to creating a strong foundation for the tourism and sports sectors. These efforts aim to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a premier global destination for both adventure tourism and winter sports. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s administration is focusing on upgrading infrastructure to improve connectivity, enhance the quality of hospitality services, and ensure that visitors have a memorable and seamless experience. Key projects are in the pipeline to improve road networks, airport facilities, and the availability of accommodation. These upgrades are expected to enhance the region’s attractiveness as a year-round destination for tourists.

Encouraging Private Sector Investment: Moreover, the Government is actively encouraging the private sector to invest in the tourism and hospitality sectors. The development of more homestays, luxury resorts, and adventure tourism facilities is part of the broader vision to enhance the experience of travelers and generate employment opportunities for local communities. This aligns with the broader goals of sustainable tourism and the promotion of Jammu and Kashmir as an inclusive, diverse, and culturally rich destination.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah concluded by reaffirming his government’s commitment to supporting the tourism and sports industries. He expressed gratitude for the hard work of all the stakeholders involved in these initiatives, which will undoubtedly make Jammu and Kashmir a sought-after destination in the years to come.  As the region continues to develop and grow, the coming years will see Jammu and Kashmir become a hub for international sports events, cultural exchanges, and tourism, ensuring its place as a global hotspot for visitors from every corner of the world.
