Tura/ Shillong: President Droupadi Murmu will be on a two-day visit to Meghalaya on Monday.
She will inaugurate the Meghalaya Games in Tura, lay the foundation of the Shillong Ropeway and address a public gathering at Mawphlang Sacred Groves during her visit, officials said.
This will be Murmu’s maiden visit to the state after becoming the President in 2022.
The President will be arriving at Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills, from Assam’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by a special Indian Air Force MI-17 helicopter tomorrow.
Officials said that Murmu will stay overnight at Tura, which is predominantly inhabited by indigenous Garo people, thus becoming the first President to spend overnight in Garo Hills region.
She will also be the first state guest to stay at newly inaugurated Raj Bhavan in Tura.
Murmu will be the third President to visit Garo Hills after late President Dr Rajendra Prasad and President Pratibha Patil had visited the town in 1952 and 2008 respectively.
The President will inaugurate the Meghalaya Games 2024 at PA Sangma Sports Complex in Tura.
Over 3,000 athletes representing 12 districts of the State will compete in 22 disciplines.
Traditional games of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo indigenous communities will be included in the Meghalaya Games for which the state government has allocated over Rs 23 crore.
Apart from inaugurating the Meghalaya Games, the President will fly to Meghalaya’s capital Shillong, which is mostly inhabited by indigenous Khasi and Jaintia people, to lay the foundation stone for the Shillong Ropeway project and will address a public gathering at Mawphlang Sacred Groves on Tuesday.
Meghalaya Director General of Police L.R.Bishnoi had also chaired a meeting of top officials to review security arrangements for the visit of the President.
“We are abiding by provisions of security needs and protocol for Murmu’s visit as per the blue book,” Bishnoi told UNI.
Meanwhile, Shillong and Tura are getting a facelift and cleaning of the city’s thoroughfares is in full swing before the arrival of the President.
