PM Modi ignoring Manipur: Congress

New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday launched a fresh attack at the BJP-led government at the Centre over the current situation in Manipur saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completely failed his duty as the PM by choosing to “deliberately ignore” the crisis in the Northeastern state.

“Let us remind ourselves amidst all the news of the PM’s visit to the USA that today is the 50th consecutive day of Manipur’s pain, distress and agony,” Congress general secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh wrote in a tweet.

In an apparent reference to the appointment sought by the leaders of 10 Opposition parties from Manipur to meet the PM, he said, “The PM who gives Gyaan on so many issues has sadly not said a word on the tragedy that has engulfed the state, has not given an appointment to representatives of political parties who sought time from him, and has given no indication whatsoever that he even cares or is concerned.”

The Congress MP added, “He (Narendra Modi) has totally and completely failed his duty as the Prime Minister of India by choosing to deliberately ignore Manipur in a time of crisis. His behaviour on Manipur is most shocking and beyond comprehension.”

On Tuesday, the leaders of the 10 ‘like-minded’ political parties including Congress, Janata Dal (United) and Trinamool Congress submitted a joint memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office, highlighting the present crisis in Manipur after they failed.

They blamed Chief Minister N Biren Singh responsible for the current crisis in the Northeastern state.

“Manipur CM N Biren Singh is the architect of present ethnic violence because of his arbitrary actions. Had he taken preventive and prompt actions, the ethnic clashes could have been averted. While speaking as a chief guest on the observation of the Anti-Terrorism Day on May 21 at the conference hall of Old Secretariat,he himself admitted publicly that there was security lapses and intelligence failure on the part of the state government. He should be held solely responsible for the present crisis,” they wrote in the memorandum.
