Auriyya/New Delhi: An estimated 74 people were injured when the Capital-bound Kaifiyat express derailed after hitting a loader between Pata and Achalada stations on the Kanpur-Delhi grand trunk route in the pre-dawn hours today, four days after the Kalinga Utkal Express ran off the tracks, killing 24 people and more than a 100 injured.
In a chain reaction, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu offered to put in his papers and was asked to wait by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Railway Board Chairman A K Mittal resigned, owning moral responsibilty for both the accidents and was replaced by distinguished technocrat Ashwani Lohani.
UP Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said the 12225 Kafiyat Express derailed after a loader carrying sand for track work on the dedicated freight corridor overturned on the tracks and the rushing train collided with it at around 0240 hrs.
