Srinagar : The Medical Unit of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, in collaboration with Kashmir Eye Hospitals, organised a two-day Mega Eye Screening-cum-Awareness Camp at the institute’s Medical Unit on October 13 and 14. A total of 332 patients were examined and treated on the first day.

The initiative was  about raising awareness of eye health among students and encouraging them to get regular eye check-ups for the early detection and timely treatment of vision issues. Prof Anurag Misra, the Director NIT Srinagar, expressed the institute’s dedication to the health and well-being of both students and staff. “Good health is crucial for academic success and overall growth. Programs like this eye screening camp help students grasp the significance of preventive healthcare and the importance of seeking timely medical advice. We’re grateful for our partnership with Kashmir Eye Hospitals in bringing specialized eye-care services right to our campus,” he shared. Prof Misra also highlighted the need for doctors and the Medical Unit to prioritize screening for glaucoma, a serious eye condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss if not caught and treated early. He stressed the importance of early detection, regular eye exams, and timely referrals for specialized care to prevent avoidable vision impairment. Dr Adil Majeed Mir, the Director of Kashmir Eye Hospitals, noted that the camp offered patients a chance to undergo eye exams and receive medical guidance. “Regular eye check-ups are vital for spotting vision-related issues early on. Students often spend long hours reading, studying, and using digital screens, so being aware of eye health and getting timely screenings is especially important,” he explained. A dedicated team of 12 medical professionals, including Dr Jasiya and Dr Reem Javid, examined and treated patients during the camp while also providing valuable advice on eye care. Dr Gowhar Nabi, the Medical Officer at NIT Srinagar, emphasized the need to make preventive healthcare a key part of campus life. “Many eye-related issues can be managed more effectively when caught early. Students shouldn’t ignore symptoms like blurred vision, eye strain, or ongoing discomfort; they should seek professional advice when necessary. Regular screenings and awareness can make a significant difference.”
