New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed Jammu & Kashmir along with other Himalayan states to enhance monitoring and early-warning systems for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and snow avalanches. During a high-level review meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, officials from J&K, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh evaluated risk factors in vulnerable high-altitude areas.
The MHA emphasized a strategic shift from traditional disaster response to proactive risk assessment, preventive mitigation, and community-level preparedness. Authorities were instructed to ensure critical scientific warnings are transmitted without delay to district administrations for immediate action. Furthermore, the Ministry reviewed ongoing GLOF mitigation projects sanctioned in 2024 and called for their expedited implementation to protect lives and infrastructure from climate-linked hazards.
