LG Sinha Calls on IIM Jammu to Aim Among World’s Best

Jammu :Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Saturday joined faculty, students, alumni, members of the Board of Governors and other dignitaries at IIM Jammu to mark the institute’s 10-year journey, calling upon it to set an ambitious roadmap for the next decade and establish itself among the world’s leading business schools.
Recalling IIM Jammu’s modest beginning with 56 students at a temporary campus on Canal Road, Sinha said the institute has, over the past decade, emerged as a nationally recognised and internationally engaged centre for management education.
He noted that IIM Jammu is now the fifth IIM in the country to hold both AMBA and EFMD accreditations and has developed academic partnerships with institutions in several countries, including France, Morocco, South Korea, Greece, the UK, Germany, Australia, Poland, Sweden, Taiwan and Brazil.
The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted the institute’s growth in research, noting that its research output has increased from two published papers in 2017 to nearly 350 this year.
Commending Director Prof. B.S. Sahay, the faculty and the Board of Governors for their decade-long efforts, Sinha said IIM Jammu’s growth story has emerged as an example for other business schools.
He said the institute should now develop a distinctive academic identity rather than relying primarily on case studies from Western business schools.
“IIM Jammu should define its own bold and distinctive ideas and turn the boardrooms of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh into living case studies,” the Lieutenant Governor said, calling for greater research rooted in local enterprise, border economies and frontier development.
He also stressed the need to strengthen experiential learning, urging that every student undertake a tangible project before graduation through entrepreneurship initiatives, policy challenges or engagement with local businesses.
On research, Sinha called for a sharper focus on border economies, sustainable development and frontier entrepreneurship, saying these areas provide IIM Jammu with an opportunity to develop globally relevant expertise.
He also emphasised the role of placements and entrepreneurship in nation-building, expressing hope that IIM Jammu graduates would go on to reshape major companies and establish leading enterprises in the coming decade.
“The real examinations take place in corporate boardrooms, markets and in life itself,” he said, stressing the importance of preparing students to deal with complex situations where information is incomplete and ready-made solutions are unavailable.
Drawing comparisons with Harvard, Stanford and Wharton, the Lieutenant Governor said leading global business schools built their reputations around distinctive academic strengths and sustained those ideas over generations.
He called upon IIM Jammu to convert its rapid institutional growth into new discoveries and solutions in administration, sustainable development and entrepreneurship, particularly in border regions.
“If IIM Jammu continues to move forward with complete confidence over the next ten years, I am certain that its name will be spoken across the world with immense pride and respect,” Sinha said.
During the event, the Lieutenant Governor also released seven coffee-table books published by IIM Jammu.
Chairman of the Board of Governors Dr Milind PralhadKamble, former BoG Chairman Sriram Dandekar, BoG member Anand Kripalu, Director Prof B.S. Sahay, Operating Partner at Advent International S. Shivakumar, vice chancellors of various universities, heads of departments, faculty members, students, prominent citizens and senior civil and police officials attended the event.
