Budgam : KVK Budgam, in collaboration with the Regional Office of the Spices Board in Srinagar on Tuesday conducted a training-cum-awareness programme aimed at enhancing the capabilities of spice growers in the region.
The initiative focused on scientific production methods, post-harvest management, quality standards, value addition, and market opportunities for high-value spices such as hill garlic, Kashmiri chilli, and saffron. The event was coordinated by Dr. Ambreen Nabi and Shri Ashutosh Gautam, who provided expert insights into the cultivation and marketing of these spices. In his opening remarks, Dr. Bilal Ahmed Lone, Head of KVK Budgam, emphasized the importance of adopting scientific and quality-oriented production practices to address challenges and leverage opportunities within the spice sector. He advocated for modern agricultural technologies to enhance productivity and profitability, positioning agriculture as a sustainable livelihood option for local farmers. The technical sessions included comprehensive guidance from Ashutosh Gautam on saffron production, post-harvest management, and adherence to quality standards, including organic practices and Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs). He also highlighted the significance of participating in national and international trade events to expand market access for regional spices. Additionally, the Spices Board’s support services, including technical assistance and quality evaluation, were discussed. Dr. Ambreen Nabi further elaborated on the adaptability of various spice varieties to the Kashmir Valley, presenting targeted crop improvement strategies and recommended practices to optimize crop performance.
