Srinagar : Kashmir Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) in Sempora on TuesdayWorld Hepatitis Day with an awareness program focused on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of hepatitis.
Organized by the Department of Microbiology, the event featured senior faculty and health professionals who stressed the importance of public awareness and routine screening to mitigate the impact of viral hepatitis. Executive Director Insha Qazi highlighted the critical role of regular screening and timely medical intervention in preventing complications associated with the disease. She emphasized that awareness, early diagnosis, vaccination, and access to treatment are vital for achieving the global objective of eliminating hepatitis as a public health threat. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Nazir Ahmad Khan described hepatitis as a “dangerous disease” that can silently damage the liver, urging healthcare professionals to incorporate hepatitis screening into routine clinical practice. Prof. (Dr.) Syed Khursheed, Head of the Department of Microbiology, pointed out that many individuals with hepatitis are unaware of their condition, making routine screening essential. He announced that KMCH advocates for regular testing for Hepatitis B and C and plans to introduce advanced diagnostic methods to enhance their services. Medical Superintendent Dr. Syed Mubashir commended the awareness efforts and noted that KMCH provides free vaccines under the Universal Immunisation Programme, along with subsidized hepatitis screening to improve accessibility for the public.
