MeT forecasts widespread rainfall from today
Srinagar: Srinagar on Saturday went through its hottest day of the season with temperatures reaching 35.9 degrees Celsius, significantly above the seasonal average.
The temperature marks a notable increase of 5.8 degrees Celsius compared to normal levels, although it remains below last year’s peak of 37.4 degrees Celsius. The heatwave extended across much of Kashmir, with several regions recording similarly elevated temperatures, including Kupwara at 35.6 degrees Celsius and Ganderbal and Baramulla at 34.5 degrees Celsius each. The Meteorological Department has forecast a substantial change in weather conditions, predicting widespread rainfall and thunderstorms from July 19 to July 23. The forecast indicates generally cloudy skies with intermittent rain, and some areas may experience intense showers and heavy rainfall, particularly in the late afternoon and evening. Districts such as Reasi and Udhampur are expected to face heavy to very heavy rainfall, raising concerns about potential weather-related hazards, including flash floods and landslides. Officials have issued warnings regarding the increased risk of localized flooding and waterlogging, advising the public to avoid travel to vulnerable areas during heavy rain and to adhere to official weather advisories. Farmers are also encouraged to halt agricultural activities during this period to mitigate potential losses. Following the anticipated rainfall, weather conditions are expected to improve by July 24, although brief spells of rain may persist until July 27.
