“Muharram is the sacred first month of Islamic calendar, a time for Muslims to honor divine traditions and reflect on core values like faith and sacrifice.”
Dr. Firdous A Reshi
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran. Almighty Allah says in the Quran: “Indeed, the number of months with Almighty Allah is twelve months… of these, four are sacred” (Quran 9:36). Muharram is a special time for Muslims to remember the values of faith, patience, courageand sacrifice. The spirit of sacrifice associated with Muharram is most clearly seen in the life of Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Imam Hussain stood firmly for truth and justice and refused to support oppression and wrongdoing. His stand reflects the Quranic teaching: “O you who believe! Stand firmly for justice, as witnesses to Almighty Allah” (Quran 4:135). In the year 680 CE, at Karbala, Imam Hussain (RA), along with his family members and companions, faced great hardship. They were deprived of food and water, yet they remained steadfast in their faith and trust in Almighty Allah. On the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, Imam Hussain (RA) and many of his companions were martyred. Their sacrifice was not for worldly gain but for the protection of truth, justiceand the values of Islam. The Quran teaches that righteousness requires sacrifice and devotion to Almighty Allah. Almighty Allah says: “You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love” (Quran 3:92). The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA) is a powerful example of giving up everything for the sake of what is right. Muharram also reminds Muslims of the importance of patience. Almighty Allah says: “Indeed, Almighty Allah is with the patient” (Quran 2:153). Imam Hussain (RA) showed extraordinary patience during the trials of Karbala and trusted Almighty Allah even in the most difficult circumstances. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) also emphasized the importance of Muharram. In an authentic Hadith, he said: “The best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Almighty Allah, Muharram” (Sahih Muslim). Another Hadith mentions the virtue of fasting on the Day of Ashura, for which the Prophet (SAW) hoped that Almighty Allah would forgive the sins of the previous year (Sahih Muslim). These teachings encourage Muslims to increase their worship and good deeds during this blessed month.
“The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA) inspires millions to champion truth and justice, practice patience during trials, and fully trust Allah. By embracing the lessons of Muharram alongside the guidance of the Quran and Hadith, Muslims cultivate courage, integrity, and compassion—affirming that true success comes from obeying Allah and standing firmly for righteousness, regardless of the hardships faced.”
Muharram is therefore not only a time to remember a historical event but also an opportunity to strengthen faith and character. The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA) teaches us to stand for truth, support justice, remain patient during hardships and trust Almighty Allah in every situation. His noble example continues to inspire millions of people around the world. By reflecting on the lessons of Muharram and following the guidance of the Quran and Hadith, Muslims can develop courage, honesty, compassion and a strong commitment to righteousness. The spirit of sacrifice in Muharram reminds us that true success lies in obeying Almighty Allah and standing firmly for truth and justice, no matter how difficult the circumstances may be.
