MeT predicts widespread wet spell from June 11 to 14
Srinagar: Several parts of Kashmir, including Shopian, Banihal, Kulgam, Bijbehara, Bandipora, and Baramulla, experienced sudden hailstorms and heavy rainfall on Tuesday, offering brief relief from rising temperatures. Meanwhile, severe heatwave conditions persisted in parts of the Jammu division, particularly Udhampur.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that north India’s temperatures will stay above normal until June 11, rising by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius before gradually declining. Consequently, heatwave alerts remain in force through Wednesday for isolated areas across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, western Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
Relief is expected as a fresh Western Disturbance hits the region on June 11. Meteorological Centre Srinagar Director, Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that weather will remain mostly hot and dry until June 10, with possible brief afternoon showers. From June 11 to 14, the Union Territory anticipates cloudy weather with light rain and thunderstorms at scattered places.
“Thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour, gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour, accompanied by brief intense showers, are expected at isolated to scattered locations during the period,” Ahmad said.
The IMD also forecast rainfall across the Western Himalayan region and parts of adjoining northern plains between June 9 and June 14. Officials warned that intense downpours could trigger flash floods, mudslides, and localized flooding in vulnerable areas of Jammu and Kashmir between June 11 and June 14. Authorities have advised residents, farmers, and travelers to remain alert, noting that while the rain will break the heatwave, the severe weather poses localized risks.
