New Delhi, May 20 (UNI) The national capital recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 44.5 degrees Celsius — 4.1 points more than the season’s average. The weather department has issued an orange alert for the national capital for the coming days, with forecast of heat wave conditions at many places and likelihood of severe heat wave at isolated places.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), sustained strong surface winds with speeds reaching 15- 25 kmph, occasionally gusting to 35 kmph during the day, are also expected.

As per the significant weather features shared by the weatherman, “Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions very likely to occur during next two days and heat wave conditions very likely thereafter. “

“No large change in maximum and minimum temperatures likely during next seven days,” the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi said on Wednesday.

With the orange alert, the residents have been advised to be prepared to take necessary measures as per the heat wave conditions, which includes moderate health concern for vulnerable people including infants, elderly people with chronic diseases.

Experts suggest to avoid heat exposure, wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothes, and cover the head, using a cloth, hat or an umbrella.

People have been advised to drink sufficient water, and as often as possible, even if not thirsty.

It is suggested to keep fire extinguishers at home and in vehicles, as per the actions suggested by the weather agency due to the above normal day temperatures over the national capital.

Meanwhile, the average Air Quality Index (AQI) level in the city on Wednesday was ‘moderate’ with an index value of 168.
