New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) In a key leadership transition for the Indian Navy amid growing maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region, the government on Saturday announced the appointment of Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, as the next Chief of the Naval Staff, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who will retire from service on May 31.
According to an official announcement, Vice Admiral Swaminathan is currently serving as the 34th Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, a position he assumed on July 31, 2025.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, the officer is a specialist in communication and electronic warfare and brings nearly four decades of operational and strategic experience to the top naval post.
He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, the Joint Services Command and Staff College, the College of Naval Warfare, and the United States Naval War College.
A recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has held several key operational commands during his career, including missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
On promotion to Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, where he played a key role in training across the force. He was also instrumental in raising the Indian Naval Safety Team, which oversees operational safety across all verticals of the Navy.
He later headed the Navy’s Work Up Organisation as Flag Officer Sea Training before being appointed Flag Officer Commanding the Western Fleet, often referred to as the Navy’s “Sword Arm”. He also served as Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Advisor, Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India.
After being promoted to Vice Admiral, he served as Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, Controller of Personnel Services and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters. Prior to his current role, he was Vice Chief of the Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters.
Vice Admiral Swaminathan holds a BSc degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, an MSc in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, an MA in Defence Studies from King’s College London, an MPhil in Strategic Studies from University of Mumbai, and a PhD in International Studies from the same university.
