Jammu: In a sharp critique of the political standoff in West Bengal, veteran security analyst and Spokesman J&K BJP Brigadier Anil Gupta (retd) has characterized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to step down as a “direct assault on the Constitution.”
Following a decisive electoral mandate from the people of Bengal, Gupta asserts that the transfer of power must be “smooth, lawful, and immediate,” warning that any delay constitutes a “betrayal of the republic.”
Gupta highlighted a persistent “pattern of disrespect for democratic norms” throughout Banerjee’s tenure, citing her frequent “open defiance of the Governor’s Office” and the “suppression of Opposition Voices” through state machinery. He further noted that her habit of “challenging the authority of central institutions” has systematically weakened the nation’s cooperative federalism.
The critique extended to the INDI Alliance and Rahul Gandhi, whom Gupta accused of shielding Banerjee’s “undemocratic behaviour” for the sake of “political expediency.” He argued that by prioritizing a “fragile coalition over the sanctity of the Constitution,” these leaders are becoming “complicit in eroding the democratic fabric of the nation.”
Warning of a looming constitutional crisis, Gupta stated that if this defiance is not checked, it could set a “dangerous precedent” where electoral outcomes are disregarded across India. He concluded by advising Banerjee to “vow down to [the people’s] will with grace and dignity” to avoid an unceremonious removal by the Governor through established constitutional mechanisms.
