Washington, May 1 (Sputnik/UNI) Iran has communicated to mediators its readiness to engage in talks in Pakistan early next week if the United States is willing to accept its new proposal, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing sources.
Tehran reportedly offers to discuss its conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz if the United States guarantees the cessation of attacks and the lifting of the blockade of Iranian ports, the report said.
The proposal reportedly provides for discussion of issues related to the Iranian nuclear programme in exchange for easing sanctions from the United States.
US President Donald Trump told Congress on Friday that hostilities against Iran, which began on February 28, have terminated, though the Pentagon continues to update, its military posture in the region as the alleged threat remains.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, causing damage and civilian casualties. On April 7, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire. Subsequent talks in Islamabad ended inconclusively, and Trump extended the cessation of hostilities to give Iran time to come up with a “unified proposal.”
